Also known as: Caucasian Ovtcharka, Kavkaskaya Ovcharka,
Metskhvare, Kautkashkie Owtcharka, Caucasian Shepherd,
Caucasian Sheepdog, Nagazi, Gempr, Volkodav as well as
 other names and spellings

We consider the term: "mountain dog" to be a misnomer
since no translation of the word "Ovcharka"
exists that suggests or translates to "mountain dog,"
but rather, is a name arbitrarily applied to the
breed by one US breeder.
The great majority of the breed fanciers
and organizations the world over,
such as AKC/FSS, UKC, FCI, AACOO, ARBA, RKF, etc
use exclusively the original and correct name.
